Yes, today, August 15, 2009, is the 40th Anniversary of the Three Days of Peace and Music at Woodstock '69.
Woodstock was a major event in 1969, promoting peace, love, music, and art in the age of flower power. The creator of the festival, Michael Lang, estimated a turnout of about 10,000 people, little did he know that nearly 300,000 people would arrive at his event in Woodstock, NY with and without tickets. Because the traffic on the way there was so horrendous, many abandoned their cars and walked miles to the concert. Once there, people enjoyed the music of legendary artists such as Janis Joplin, The Who, The Grateful Dead, and Jimi Hendrix. Many also set up stands in the surrounding forests selling drugs, jewelry, and and whatever else they could think of.
There was a documentary made afterwards with actual footage from the concert, and this fall the new movie Taking Woodstock is coming out. Check it out here.
